October 2024

Who can believe it's already October? We had an AMAZING first month of school in September!
Our focus in our SEL and Social Studies classes is identifying and managing our emotions, problem-solving, and communities. What makes something a community? How can we improve and better the different communities of which we are members (school, home, neighborhood, etc.)? Why is it important to understand our emotions? How does what we feel affect our daily lives?
In English, we are focusing on encoding through phoneme-grapheme correspondences. We are heavily focusing on closed-syllables, short vowels, consonants, consonant blends, and consonant digraphs and trigraphs. In addition to our spelling focus, we are working diligently on our sentence structure, emphasizing SVO and punctuation.
In Reading, our focus areas are in listening comprehension by identifying facts and details, making inferences, and using the text as evidence. We are going to start moving into our Text Talks and Vocabulary Instruction! Additionally, we are working towards fluency, which is the rate at which we read, the accuracy at which we read words, and our understanding of what we read.
(rate + accuracy + comprehension = fluency)
We have integrated our Math and Science, and we have STEM time every afternoon. Our focus skills in math are math fact fluency and place value. In science, we started with becoming scientists and using the scientific process (asking questions, using observations to formulate hypotheses, using experiments to test our hypotheses, etc.). Now, we are ready to take on world problems (through word problems) to solve, find solutions, and understand motion and stability: forces and interactions and energy.
Please remember that in order to create a conducive learning environment, we must all show respect. Respect for ourselves, respect for others, and respect for our environment. Don't forget to BARK!
