With a state berth slipping away from the Hazleton Area Girls track and field team on Tuesday, the Lady Cougars last hope delivered.
Their 1600-meter relay team of Ava Hinkle, Zoe Pollock, Sonia Diaz and Jayla Eberts struck gold in the final event on Day 2 of the District 2 Class 3A Championships at Memorial Stadium, assuring the Lady Cougars would be represented at Shippensburg University for the state meet over Memorial Day weekend.
Hazleton Area senior Joel Vasquez, the Wyoming Valley Conference champion in the discus, finished second behind Wallenpaupack’s Ryan Vargo (176 feet-4 inches) in the event at districts. However, Vasquez’s runner-up flip of 166-1 still was far enough to exceed the state qualifying standard, so he also will be headed to Shippensburg.
