Speech therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication problems and speech disorders. It is performed by speech-language pathologists (SLPs), who are often referred to as speech therapists. Therapy may include working to improve speech sounds (articulation), language, fluency (stuttering), augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), Autisum, etc.
After an assessment is completed, goals are developed to address each student's needs individually. Services may be provided in a group or individually depending on a student's needs and the severity of the disorder.
At home practice is essential in order for a student to make adequate progress. You can help your student by reviewing materials sent home, correcting their speech or language, asking them questions about their enviornment, giving them specific directions when they are helping you, etc.
