Please understand that this rubric is only used at the end of the 4th quarter.  Students can earn up to 32 points on the end of the year prompt.  All students will write according to the same prompt (no, it will not be posted or discussed beforehand.  sorry).  Also understand that according to this rubric, writing that corresponds to the level 3, or transitional, column is actually where kindergarten students should be.  Column 4, or advanced/conventional, writing is just that - advanced and flawless.  This is the type of writing we all aspire to be able to do, but it is very difficult to produce.  Students will earn up to 4 points in each area...they will not be given a 'blanket' score of transitional.  It is possible to earn anywhere from 8 to 32 points.  If you have questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact me.  We ask for your understanding in that this is the first time we are grading a writing sample in this way.  Teachers are learning right along with the students and we sincerely appreciate your cooperation.
