Welcome to the 2024-2025 School Year! My name is Melissa McGee and I will be your child’s second grade teacher. This will be my nineteenth year teaching at Drums. I live in the town of Weatherly with my husband, my daughter who is eleven years old, my son who is 7 years old, and my dog, Sunshine! I hope you and your child are excited and eagerly anticipating the new year! I am sending you this letter to inform you about some basics for the year. As time goes on, I will send additional notes as needed.
*** I will be sending home instructions on how to contact me through the ClassTag app. ***I heard the district will not be using ClassTag this school year, so once the communication template is up and running, we will get connected through it! Email is also perfect...mcgeem@hasdk12.org
Here are some helpful tips to get the year off to a great start…
Supplies: Please send in within the first week of school with your child the following items...crayons, pencils, notebook, 4 glue sticks, two boxes of tissues, a pack of small sandwich size and large gallon size zip bags. I will happily accept other items if you are able to send in for our classroom...white board markers both thin and thick, plain solid colored folders, paper towels, plastic spoons, baby wipes, and bottles of unscented clear hand sanitizer. Thank you so much for helping our classroom with these needed supplies! Students will need to bring three sharpened pencils and their home/school folder to class each day. I will give the children their folder on the first day. Any homework assignments, papers for the office/nurse, etc. should be returned in the school side of the folder. Items placed in the home side can stay at home. I have scissors in the classroom, so it is not necessary to send in with your child. If your child wants a small pencil sharpener, please make sure it is the kind that catches the shavings so they do not end up in their desks or on the floor.
Homework: Children are given a School Planner that is to be taken home every night. Encourage your child to read with you at least twenty minutes each night and practice what we learned. Doing this will truly help your child build their reading and math skills. It will also strengthen the bond between you and your child.
Dismissal: The school office requires that the teacher be notified of any changes to the way your child goes home. Please send me a little note if your child is going to be on parent pickup or has an appointment on that particular day. If the teacher or the school office is not notified of any changes, your child will be expected to ride his or her bus as usual. If your child will be parent pickup for the year, please send me a note so I can keep it on file.Snacks: The students will have a short snack time. Please provide your child with a daily healthy snack (no candy/soda etc). The students will be allowed to go to the water fountain for a drink, however you may send in a small juice box or small bottle of water.Parties: Please let me know if your child has any food allergies. Healthy food ideas include fruit, pretzels, popcorn, fruit snacks, etc. Non-food items make great treats too, such as pencils, stickers, etc. Please do not send in cupcakes or any other high-calorie food.Invitations: Invitations can be handed out as long as feelings will not be hurt. For example, if the whole class is invited, all the girls are invited to an all-girl party, or all the boys are invited to an all-boy party, no feelings will be hurt.
Absent work: If your child is absent, we will put the pages they missed on their desk. At the end of the day, we will send the papers to the homework table unless you notify me of another arrangement. If your child is absent for a few days, the papers do not have to be completed in one night. Just send me a note letting me know that you need some more time.
Classroom Donations: Our classroom will always be accepting donations such as tissues, clear/unscented hand sanitizer, Lysol/Clorox wipes, baby wipes, paper towels, glue sticks, crayons, markers, sidewalk chalk, large and small zip-lock bags, dry erase markers, pencils, erasers, prizes for the prize box, etc. If you can donate any of these items at any point during the year, it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Please feel free to contact me at any time through email or call me at the school with any questions or concerns. Together we will make it a wonderful year for your child!
