Course Description:
The Arts and Humanities Academy is designed to provide students with an innovative and rigorous academic education designed to inspire higher levels of academic performance by integrating student interest and talent in the arts to all facets of the educational process. The Instrumental portion of the Arts and Humanities Academy will provide students with an advance study of the musical craft by integrating musical technique, theory, aural skills, and history with other disciplines within the academy. Students will be exposed to multiple genres of instrumental and vocal music from various established periods of music history.
Required Materials:
· Provided Textbook
· Folder/Binder(s)
· Notebook(s)
· Pencil with functioning eraser
Classroom Rules:
· Arrive to each class on time.
· Absolutely no gum, candy, food, or beverages in the classroom.
· Be ready with your instrument, music, and pencil when class starts.
· Respect all faculty, staff, students, equipment, and furnishings of the band room.
· Be responsible for your instrument, music, and equipment.
· Observe all rules in the student handbook.
Grading Policy:
Each Student will be graded using a Tiered Assessment Model
(Daily Grade, Assessments/Exams/Projects, Tiered Level Assessment, Performances, Gala)
Daily Performance Grade (30% of your final grade):
Active(Grade 100%)
You are enthusiastic in class.
You always have a pencil ready to mark your music.
Your music is always open to the part of the music that is being rehearsed.
You are focused and on task at each stage of the rehearsal.
Your music is prepared with minor inconsistencies in pitch, rhythmic, and/or melodic content.
Moderate(Grade 90%)
You actively participate in class.
You are focused and occasionally distracted.
You occasionally must be reminded to return to task.
You usually follow directions and watch your music as other sections rehearse.
You are a contributing member of your section.
Your music is prepared with minor inconsistencies in pitch, rhythmic, and/or melodic content.
Minimal(Grade 80%)
You participate in class.
Your focus and concentration are easily distracted.
You must be reminded to return to task.
You are occasionally talking to others within/outside your section
You occasionally follow directions and watch your music as other sections rehearse.
Your music is prepared with major inconsistencies in pitch, rhythmic, and/or melodic content.
Occasional(Grade 70%)
You occasionally participate in class.
Your focus and concentration are directed towards conversation.
You must be reminded to return to task.
You are talking to others within/outside your section
You do not follow directions and watch your music as other sections rehearse.
You are not an actively contributing member of the ensemble
You are a distraction to others
Assessments/Exams/Projects (30% of your final grade)
Throughout the semester students will have a variety of written and performance based skill assessments including but not limited to playing exams, PDN questions, written examinations, and individual lessons.
Tiered Level Assessment (20% of your final grade)
Master Musician (Grade 100%)
Performance of one complete work and etude from the standard repertoire for your instrument
Performance of Major, Minor, and multiple patterns
Key Recognition for Major and Minor Keys
Sight-Read Complex Mixed Meters
Performance in Symphonic Band / Jazz Ensemble where applicable
Advanced Musician (Grade 90%)
Performance of one complete work from the standard repertoire for your instrument
Performance of Major, Minor, Mode Scales, and multiple patterns
Key Recognition for Major and Most Minor Keys
Sight-Read Mixed Meters with limited success
Performance in Symphonic Band / Jazz Ensemble where applicable
Intermediate Musician (Lab Grade 85%)
Performance of a selection from a complete work from the standard repertoire for your instrument
Performance of Major
Key Recognition for Most Major and Most Minor Keys
Sight-Read Traditional Meters
Performances (20% of your final grade)
Throughout the semester students will be evaluated in homogenous and heterogeneous group performance assessments designed to provided feedback on individual and section musicianship. Theses assessments include formal performances for all instrumental students.
Junior Showcase (20% of your final grade / Assignment Grade) S2 Only
Throughout the semester the instrumental studio will be collorbrating on a program which showcases the junior students. The entire instrumental studio will be performing adapted music for the class specifically arranged by the juniors.
