Receptive Language DisorderReceptive language is the ability to understand and comprehend what is being said or read. Sometimes, students have a difficult time with receptive language skills in school.
Receptive language involves processing of "WH" questions. In order to give a precise response, we have to understand what is being asked. Speech class provides opportunities to practice responses to WH questions. It could involve worksheet activities, flash cards, peer activities, or recalling story details.
Regardless of the type of activity, students are reminded of the following:
Who?............ is a question that relates to a person or group of people.
The answer must focus on a person, character, or group of people in a particular situation, article, story, or chapter in a book. What? ...........is a general question
When? ...........is a question that relates to time
The answer must correspond with time- (ie: hour, day, week, month, year, season, or time period)Where? ..........is a question that relates to location.
The answer must focus on a specific area, place, location, or destination.HOW? .............is a number or a process questionExamples:(Number) How many cups of flour do we need for this recipe? How many touchdowns did they get?(Process) How do you make homemade chicken noodle soup? Why? ..............is a logic/ fact/ opinion question
Speech class encourages students to pay attention to the type of question being asked on a worksheet or reading passage. Answers are practiced in verbal and written form.
