In Writer’s Workshop students will learn to use the writing process, the traits of writing, varying sentence patterns, and different types of writing.
The Writing Process:
- Prewriting-think about your topic and ideas you want to include
- Drafting-write your ideas down on paper and read it from beginning to end
- Revising-make it better by adding, deleting, and elaborating
- Editing-check the spelling, capitalization, and punctuation
- Publishing-write your final draft of your paper
The Traits of Writing:
- Ideas/Content-the topic is well defined and supported
- Organization-the sequence of events makes sense
- Word Choice-the writer creates a picture in the reader’s mind
- Conventions-the writing has correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, paragraph structure and grammar
- Voice-the voice of the author comes through, making it seem as though a real person is speaking
- Sentence Fluency-the writing flows together smoothly
Type of Writing:
- Narrative-tells a story with a beginning, middle, and end
- Descriptive-describes a person, place, thing, or idea
- Expository-gives facts, explains ideas, directions, or terms
- Persuasive-tries to convince the reader to support an opinion of the author
