Since student voice is of vital importance and value in the classroom, during the first week of school, I will give the students the opportunity to make their own classroom constitution. These will be the rules, along with my personal reminders in the classroom, which students will be expected to follow. I will also be giving students the responsibility to remind one another of the rules.

    Mrs. Cook’s 5 Rules

    1. Follow Directions quickly

    2. Raise your hand to speak

    3. Raise your hand to leave your seat

    4. Make smart choices

    5. Keep your dear teacher happy

In addition to the personal classroom constitutions the two sections I have the opportunity to teach will create and follow, students will also be taking part in a Behavior Chart. Please see the other portions of my website for further information of these behavior and performance monitoring systems.

Students will practice cursive handwriting through various practice packets.

    They will LEARN BY DOING!

Handwriting skills will be evaluated through journal writing and classroom assessments.

    SSR (Sustained Silent Reading)
Please encourage your child to bring a chapter book or reading material that is of interest to school.
For 10 minutes each day, your child will read quietly.

All students will keep personal book tally lists to keep track of what they read. I will also conference with each student at least once a week to talk about what they are reading, answer any questions, and monitor how they are utilizing the strategies learned during whole-class lesson time.

Students will also make book recommendations to the rest of their classmates in the Peer Book Recommendation section in the classroom. This will give those students who may be having some difficulty finding a book to read, see what titles their peers have enjoyed.

The students will be keeping a weekly journal, which will be kept in class. The students will be journaling constantly about what they read personally, and what we are reading together in class.

The students will complete interactive projects per quarter, take quizzes and tests to review and assess their knowledge of stories read as a class , and will write poetry, and different writing prompts.

The main method of daily parent/teacher communication will be through email and through Parent Square. Missed homework assignments will be listed daily and expected to be made up.

    Please check Parent Square daily.
