Accolades 2014-2016
Two HAHS band students will attend the Pennsylvania Music Educators Region IV Orchestra Festival at Twin Valley High School. Each student auditioned during the District 9 Orchestra festival in order to qualify in the top rankings to be allowed in the orchestra. They will audition on the first evening for the All-State Festival in March and then rehearse all day Thursday and Friday to prepare for a public concert given on Friday evening at 7 pm. Students attending are: Leandra Stirling and Tessa Perchansky

Ten HAHS band students will be traveling to Marywood University to participate in the PMEA Region 4 Band Festival. Each student auditioned at the District 9 Band festival in order to qualify and be a part of the 160 member band comprised of over 40 High Schools from Central PA and Northeast PA. Each will audition again to compete for the All State Festival in March. Students attending are: Hunter Marszalek, Austin Kulsa, , Leandra Stirling, Tessa Perchansky, Jude Stefanik, Josh Ferry, Janessa Clatch, Jon Kalnas, Maria Flowers, Rebecca Schell

Sixteen HAHS band students have been selected to participate in the Luzerne County Band Festival on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. The all day festival will be held at Dallas High School in Dallas, Pa and there will be a concert at 7pm, open to the public to enjoy various band music from two bands, one featuring 7-9 grade students and the other featuring 10-12 grade students. The band members were accepted by a committee of band directors based on recommendation of their abilities in the HAHS band. Each student has to meet the criteria of excellent participation and musical ability in order to be considered for the festival. They will practice and perform in the concert alongside students from various Luzerne County Middle/Junior and Senior High Schools, over 120 students in all. Nine students participated in the Marywood University Senior Wind Band Celebration March 4 - 5,2016. The band members were accepted based on recommendation of their abilities in the HAHS band and had to prepare an audition etude for chair placement. All nine students placed in the top band for the festival. The students rehearsed all day Friday and Saturday to prepare for a Saturday night concert with some of the best band clinicians from around the United States. Two HAHS band students will attend the Pennsylvania Music Educators District 9 One Day Jazz Festival at Wyoming Seminary on February 20, 2016. The band members were accepted by a committee of band directors based on recommendation of their abilities in the HAHS band. Both students participated in the LAB Jazz Ensemble which rehearsed for one day to prepare a portion of the Jazz Concert on Saturday Evening at 7pm. The LAB Jazz ensemble is part of the larger two day PMEA District Jazz Festival. Students from Left to Right: Jon Kalnas, Paige Lutz.

Eleven HAHS band students will attend the Pennsylvania Music Educators District 9 Band Festival at Pittston Area High School January 27 -29, 2016. Each student auditioned in November 2015 in order to qualify in the top rankings to be allowed in the band. They will audition on the first evening to try out for the Region Band and then rehearse all day Thursday and Friday to prepare for a public concert given on Friday evening at 7pm. The PMEA District 9 Band is comprised of the top Northeast PA high school musicians from Susquehanna to Luzerne Counties. The orchestra is comprised of 140 top Northeast PA high school musicians from Susquehanna to Luzerne Counties. Six HAHS, 9th grade band students attended the Marywood Junior Band Celebration in December 2014. They were accepted based on their musical skills and achievements and practiced music for 2 days to prepare for a public concert. They studied among 180 other 7-9 grade students from Northeast Pennsylvania with nationally recognized conductors to further study band technique and performance. The guest conductor for the festival was Dr. Fred Romines from Marywood University. The festival host was Suzanne Benicci, Band Director at Montrose Area High School. Five HAHS band students attended the Marywood Senior Honors Band Celebration on Saturday, January 31. Due to weather, the festival was shortened to one day of rehearsing music with over 200 other top high school musicians from Northeast PA to form 2 bands. Both groups were conducted by nationally recognized clinicians on the college level to prepare for a public concert that was given that evening.The celebration was hosted by Dr Fred Romines, Director of Bands at Marywood University and music majors of the Marywood Music Department. Each student auditioned in November 2014 in order to qualify in the top rankings to be allowed in the orchestra. They will audition on the first evening to try out for the Region 4 level and then rehearse all day Thursday and Friday to prepare for a public concert given on Friday evening at 7pm. Tickets are $5 at the door for anyone who would like to attend. The orchestra is comprised of 140 top Northeast PA high school musicians from Susquehanna to Luzerne Counties. Leandra Stirling, 11th grade flute and Jack Buglio, 12th grade percussion, from HAHS, attended the PMEA Northeast Region Orchestra Festival March 11-13, 2015 at the Scranton Cultural Center. Both students auditioned at the District 9 Orchestra level in order to qualify for the Region level. They rehearsed and performed a public concert among students from 54 other top high schools from Northeast and Southeast Pa to comprise the 130 member orchestra. The group was conducted by Dr. Mark Jelinick, professor of music from Bloomsburg University.
Three HAHS Band students traveled to Hershey, Pa, March 26-28 to attend the PMEA All State Festival. All three auditioned their way to the State level through District 9 and Region 4-5. From the left, Jude Stefanik, 11th grade bass clarinet, was a member of the All State Concert Band as well as Leandra Stirling, 11th grade flute. Jack Buglio, 12th grade percussion, was a member of the All State Orchestra and also captured first place in auditions. The concert band was conducted by nationally recognized conductor and composer Brian Balmages. The orchestra was conducted by John Devlin from Washington D.C., who conducts various youth and professional level orchestras there. The All State Festival is the Commonwealth's highest level of musical achievement and featured over 600 of the best high school musicians in Pennsylvania performing in Concert Band, Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Chorus, Jazz Ensemble, and Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
