In SEL and Social Studies we continue to discuss and learn about identifying and managing our emotions, problem-solving, and communities. This month we are going to focus on the jobs and work that we do in our communities; compare and contrast civic duties versus responsibilities; and utilizing the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise for our emotional regulations.
In English, spelling is still our main focus. We continue to learn and practice spelling and reading closed-syllables, short vowels, consonants, consonant blends, and consonant digraphs and trigraphs. In addition to our spelling focus, we are working diligently on our sentence structure, emphasizing SVO and punctuation.
In Reading, our focus areas continue to be listening comprehension by identifying facts and details, making inferences, and using the text as evidence. Our Text Talks and Vocabulary Instruction have been successful. We look forward to our DEAR time each day! Our goal continues to be to attain fluency. Fluency is the rate at which we read, the accuracy at which we read words, and our understanding of what we read.
(rate + accuracy + comprehension = fluency)STEM rotations, I think, are our favorite part of the day! In math, we went back to the basics to focus on numeration. We are reviewing and practicing place values up to six digits. We are continuing to increase our math fact fluency. We are all scientists in this class! We have taken the scientific process and used it in our everyday conversations (asking questions, using observations to formulate hypotheses, using experiments to test our hypotheses, etc.). We are getting better at solving world problems, and we're reading and experimenting to better understand forces and interactions and energy.
Please remember that in order to create a conducive learning environment, we must all show respect. Respect for ourselves, respect for others, and respect for our environment. Don't forget to BARK!

Our focus in our SEL and Social Studies classes is identifying and managing our emotions, problem-solving, and communities. What makes something a community? How can we improve and better the different communities of which we are members (school, home, neighborhood, etc.)? Why is it important to understand our emotions? How does what we feel affect our daily lives?
In English, we are focusing on encoding through phoneme-grapheme correspondences. We are heavily focusing on closed-syllables, short vowels, consonants, consonant blends, and consonant digraphs and trigraphs. In addition to our spelling focus, we are working diligently on our sentence structure, emphasizing SVO and punctuation.

Now, we are ready to take on world problems (through word problems) to solve, find solutions, and understand motion and stability: forces and interactions and energy.

This month we are going to be focusing on learning about each other and creating our Classroom Family. The students and I need to work hard this month so we can have a great year! We are going to learn all about the classroom and school expectations, co-create our classroom guidelines, become experts at our routines and procedures, and complete our beginning of the year assessments. September, I believe, is one of the most important months of the school year; if we do it right, the rest of our year should be smooth sailing. ⛵I like to add a lot of movement throughout our day. Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately and wearing comfortable shoes. If you have not done so, please get the supplies for school; the list is below ⬇. I am the new 3-5 Emotional Support teacher and Case Manager at Freeland Elementary/Middle School. This is my 8th year teaching special education in the HASD, but my first year at FEMS. I hope this message finds you well! I have some news... I will no longer be working at WHEMS. I will be the new case manager for students receiving Full-Time Emotional Support at Freeland Elementary/Middle School for students in grades 3-5.
I have learned so much, had so much fun, and cherished every moment at WHEMS. Thank you for a wonderful and unforgettable seven years💙🐾💛.

What is an IEP?

An IEP is the written plan for the provision of special education support and services for students with disabilities and who are gifted. Under the federal law, IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), students who qualify under one of Pennsylvania's 13 categories are entitled to an education that meets their unique needs and provides access to the general education curriculum.

Allergies

One in thirteen children has food allergies—that’s about two in every U.S. classroom. Everyone from the school nurse to the cafeteria staff plays a role in creating a safe environment for students with food allergies. Food allergy management is extremely important.
MY CLASSROOM IS A PEANUT FREE ZONE.
I ask that you do not send any peanut products for snacks. I allow all students to eat their snack in my room if they are scheduled with me during their snack. Peanuts are not allowed in my room. Students with peanut products must not bring them into my room and, even after touching or eating them, must thoroughly wash their hands and anything that the peanut products touched.

Read With Your Child

It is extremely important to read with children, especially early on in their lives. Reading with/to a child stimulates their imagination, fosters a love for books and reading, and it helps develop listening skills, comprehension, and letter-sound correspondences. Also, just because a child can read, does not mean that reading to them should stop; even after learning how to read, being read to helps build vocabulary and enhance fluency.
