    Beginning lessons are tough. And when the groups are big like the clarinets and saxophones, the more reinforcement that can be done at home the better.     Music is a test of patience and tenacity.

    I’d be lying if I told you that I’ve never had this conversation with a parent:

    “My child enjoys music, but they just aren’t passionate about it, so we are going to explore other interests.”

    At first pass, this may seem like a logical thought process. But, I read somewhere recently that passion develops as a result of time and mastery and that takes more than just one year. While it may seem like they’ve been playing their instruments for quite a while, in the grand scheme of things, they are still young and developing musicians. You wouldn’t take this same approach with math, science, or history.

    To be passionate means to have found success and being successful in music takes time. In today’s “I need it now” world, music is a test of patience and tenacity that will yield great dividends to those who see it through.

    Many students who showed marginal success as beginners blossom into highly skilled musicians after time. I’ve even had a few of these formerly mediocre musicians tell me that they want to pursue a career in music. Their enjoyment and passion grew into something more over time.

    I fully understand, accept, and embrace the fact that most of these children will not pursue music as a profession in the same way that most math students will not be mathematicians, most science students will not become scientists, and most history students will not become historians.

    We pursue music to develop our brains. We pursue music to appreciate beauty. We pursue music to appreciate a challenge and learn to overcome obstacles. But most of all, we pursue music to be human.

    And that is the one thing we know ALL students will be — human.

    Practicing — is it worth the fight?

    You and your child are still near the beginning of your journey, but I’m sure one very important word has already become an integral part of your child’s music experience:

    PRACTICE. 

    Listen, few people like to practice — it’s like musical homework!

    I know that practicing can be a fight that you don’t want or need. I also know that most of you are not musicians and may not know how to help your child be successful in it. That’s ok. It’s not so much WHAT they practice, but THAT they practice, even if it is for just 10 minutes. In your role as a parent, you can make a big difference when it comes to practicing. You don’t have to know anything about their instrument or about music.

    Helping your child set aside a regular, dedicated time for practice over these initial months can have a dramatic effect on their trajectory as a musician!

    What does regular practice look like? For a beginner, shorter, frequent sessions are better. It takes time to develop the ability to practice in a focused, sustained manner. Set a schedule and try and stick to it so they develop a routine. As they work through their materials, prompt them with, “that was great… can I hear that again?” Or, “AWESOME! You should play that for your brother/sister/parent.” You will trick them into practicing without them even knowing it! Sneaky? Yes! But it works!

    The key to guided practice is a consistent schedule and repetition. If you can get them to sit down regularly and play things multiple times, the improvement will be significant! Please know that YOU are a crucial part of setting up your child for success in music, and I’m here to help you.

    Starting an instrument early...
    There have been a handful of students in my 25 years of teaching beginners that have already played an instrument before they got to 4th grade. This year we have a 3rd grader starting trombone with Miss Frye from Heights Terrace. Most were very successful students on their instruments because they got that early one on one attention that cannot always be offered when starting in a larger group of 8-10 students. If you are a parent or guardian of a student that has expressed interest in starting an instrument in 3rd grade, please contact me and I can give you some guidance as to what would be best. Or if they have something in mind already, I can help you get a quality instrument from Robert M. Sides or another source (Musicraft or DeLuca's) for your child rather than an instrument that has been neglected or closeted for 20 years.

    Thank you to all of the parents that attended the rental meeting! All beginning students whether they have their instrument or not should attend the first lesson on Tuesday September 24. Their times are listed on the lesson schedule posted online in the column to the left. It is updated weekly as long as I remember to hit save, so if it is not updated beginners should still always bring their instruments Tuesdays.

    I hope to see all of the beginning parents at the rental event tonight at Valley at 6PM in the cafeteria. Please try to get there early since the line will be long. There will be a sign in for parents. The sooner we get into the cafeteria for the presentation the sooner everyone will get their instruments. If you have an instrument already and need a book only, please let us know and the representatives from Robert M. Sides will be able to have someone take care of you quickly. Lessons will start on Tuesday and I would like everyone to have their instruments for that unless they run out tonight. Thank you!

    Lessons and band start next week. Middle school students have lessons Monday, and will have band on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Elementary band members will have band on Tuesdays and lessons on either Wednesdays or Fridays. Beginners will be added and will be starting after the rental night on September 19.

    There have been some parents asking about their rental instruments from Robert M. Sides. Please keep the instrument over the summer and continue to pay the monthly rental fees. Once instruments are returned, all the credit you have accumulated will be lost. Your child can continue to play over the summer even if it's just for fun. Or take private lessons from one of the many music teachers in our area. Even go to Camp Ferrwood! There are links to lots of free music over on the left side that are fun to play!

    For parents of current third graders, I have put the enrollment form in the Band Forms and Documents section of the website. If your child lost their paper, you can just print one out from there!
     
    For current band members, there is lots of free music online if you know where to look. I have updated the FREE MUSIC LINKS part of the website in the left column. There are lots of free fun songs to download and practice for the summer. For the beginners also check out the 6 note songs. Please practice the songs from your book as well.

    Congratulations on a job well done! It takes EVERYONE to make a concert successful. If there are any problems with instruments please let me know so I can arrange for them to be repaired. I will have certificates and a treat for all the middle school, elementary school and beginning band members in the next few days. I have the 2nd and 3rd grade program to prepare students for as well over the next few days. The Jazz Ensemble students will have a pizza party after school on Friday, May 24. I will take a count of how many students are DEFINITELY coming on Thursday so I don't have 4 pizzas left over like last year. I will take care of cups, napkins and plates. Students should plan on bringing something (salty snacks, drinks, desserts).

    Please make sure that your child has their instrument on Tuesday for the band's final rehearsals for their Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 15. There were many kids that forgot their music and their instrument today for the last elementary band rehearsal. School instruments should only be used for emergencies.

    Band fest participants going to Tunkhannock should meet at Maple Manor for 7am on Friday. The bus may not make it there until 7:30 but be there for 7 anyway. Please have your instrument, music, black attire to wear with your t-shirt that you will get there, and a folding music stand.

    Jazz Ensemble members should be at the Laurel Mall by 9:45 AM to help unload the cars and trucks with the equipment. We will start playing immediately after the chorus. They should also plan on helping to break down everything. We should be done before noon.

    Beginning Band members will have FULL BAND REHEARSALS on Thursdays from now until the concert. Beginners will need their instruments every Thursday. If they have a lesson Friday they should have their instruments BOTH Thursday and Friday.

    There will be Jazz band practice on Friday, March 22 since we took today off for the Science Fair and the Chorus performance in WB. Originally 3/22 was a day off since school was closed, but since we are making up a snow day that Friday we will practice until 5PM.

    The jazz band performance at the Laurel Mall is set for April 27. Students need to be there for 10AM and should be done around noon. There are already some conflicts, so please let me know immediately if your child cannot attend the performance. Thank you.

    Jazz band will start on Fridays in January. I am opening up the group this year to non-jazz instruments (flute, clarinet, french horn, baritone and tuba) since most of the tunes have parts for those instruments!

    A Night of Penn State Jazz
    Sunday October 21, 2018, at the Alice C. Wiltsie Performing Arts Center in Hazleton

    The concert, featuring Penn State’s Centre Dimensions jazz ensemble, will begin at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm for general seating.

    Tickets are complimentary to the HASD Band/Chorus Members. There is no admission charge for the Hazleton Area Band/Chorus Members. Tickets for Parents/Guardians are $10 Dollars.

    If you have any students who would attend the concert on October 21st at the Wiltsie Center please have them complete the survey. Students are free and Parents/Guardians are $10 dollars. I am waiting to hear on how Penn State would like to have parent/guardian tickets paid.  Please only have students register if they are serious about attending the concert.

    Thank you to all the parents that attended the rental meeting last night! If you were unable to attend please go to Robert M. Sides in Wilkes Barre or visit their website at www.rmsides.com to fill out a rental application. If you plan on getting your instrument from your own source, please have it by your child's next lesson. Most will be Thursday and Friday. Please check the Lesson Schedule link on the left for exact times and days. Amazon is good for Tradition of Excellence Book 1, music stand and care kits, not instruments. If you want to find something GOOD used email me at faddent@hasdk12.org and I will be more than happy to guide you. I do not want any parent wasting their hard earned money, nor will I be able to fix the bad instrument. Here's some reviews of instruments at Amazon. These are NOT MY WORDS these are quotes from parent reviews:
     
    I haven't been able to play this flute because the keys that should go down don't and vice versa. It comes with a tiny screw driver but the screws that need adjusting are under other parts and basically unreachable unless you want to just take apart the flute. Extremely disappointed after spending so much money. Did not attempt to play it until 30 day window had passed. I wish they would allow me to exchange it. They just told me to take it to an instrument store. Really? They couldn't fix it btw. Of all the flutes I've owned, this had never happened. Are children assembling them? Ugh
     
    As a musician I wanted to love this affordable clarinet but for some reason not all the notes worked and I had to blow an excessive amount of air into the mouthpiece to get a decent sound to come out of it. Something was not right in the body of the clarinet and I returned this item.
     
    You get what you pay for. Very poor quality product. I read the reviews on the saxophone before purchasing. Yes, there was some 1 star reviews, but there were tons of good reviews that I thought offset the bad ones. Boy was I wrong! As you can read for yourself on plenty of other reviews, the low C is useless. Completely useless. Most of the notes are out of tune and are unfixable. The screws holding in the rollers are loose and I lost one roller completely. I should've known this was too good to be true. Unfortunately I am beyond my 30 day money back guarantee. There is a 1 year warranty but that is only good for fixing or replacing the piece of junk. Who would pay to ship the item to be fixed or replaced when you're just going to get the same POS back?! So I am now down $200 and in search of a good, used saxophone to play.
     
    Bought this for my son to learn to play trumpet. 13 months after purchase (less than a year after use) the valve completely froze. It will cost me more to have it repaired than it is worth. Don't waste your money. Spend a little more and get something that will at least last more than a year.
     
    Beware! I do not recommend buying this horn! It is not a quality instrument. Within 18 months of ownership, the keys had frozen and stuck multiple times. The last time I took the horn in to an instrument repair shop, I was told it could not be fixed. The materials are cheap and the sound quality is poor.. You would be better off renting a French Horn or buying a quality used instrument made by Holton or Conn or Yamaha. You can expect to pay $3,000 to $6,000 for a new French horn so with that in perspective realize that this at 1/10th of the cost is only 1/10th
    as good.
     
    Bought this over a year and it busted so badly we had to buy a new trombone- the welds are not strong according to the repair guy and so it weakened other joints and busted. The sound was ok and great for a student if they had built it better
     
    This instrument seemed like a great alternative to renting. Long story short. The instrument separated. I took pictures. Filed a claim with KK music. KK music had me send the pictures.. Had me pay 60+ dollars to ship it to them. Ultimately for them to say they can't repair or replace it.
     
    I don't have a problem with KK Music, but Mendini by Cecilio buyer beware. I ordered a Mendini by Cecilio baritone through KK Music Store from Amazon. A short year later, it broke (valve issue). I took it to a reputable music store based on recommendation from our school and was told it "needs new valve guide". Apparently this is something they cannot fix. I am afraid I was sold a lemon, with plastic parts that do not have easy to find replacements. Of course, this all happened just outside the one-year warranty.

    The 2nd grade program will be Thursday, May 24 at 10AM in the gym. This should not last much more than 30 minutes. Students may dress up in their nicest spring attire within school dress code. I encourage students to wear their "Sunday best" for this program. I would prefer that students do not wear shorts.

    I am scheduled for jury duty at the Luzerne County Courthouse on Monday March 19. If students miss their lesson because of me being out, they should try to attend the next day with a like lesson group (woodwind, brass, percussion).

    Congratulations to all the band members on a job well done! I have new music ready to hand out for middle school band on Thursday during FLEX and new music for the elementary band members next Monday and Tuesday during their lessons. I hope to have a treat for the students before Winter Recess as well.
     
    The lesson schedules will look different now. I am taking away all the colors. Students should now look for their group letter and time.

    ATTENTION!!! The Winter Concert will be held Friday, December 8, at 10:00 AM in the Valley Gymnasium. Letters for elementary band members have gone home. Middle school band members will have letters sent in the next few days. This will be a relatively short concert. The one in the spring will be longer since there are two additional groups (jazz band and beginning band). Letters for the concert are located in the Band Forms and Documents section of this website.

    Friday the 13th is a day associated with having bad luck. But the more students practice their instrument, the luckier they will get! Students should be practicing 20 minutes a day 5 days a week. They should be practicing their lines of music in their book 5 times minimum each day. Total minutes per week should be 100 minimum. They need to make the time so they are not holding other students back. All 4th grade students and beginners need to be filling out their practice chart and getting a signature the night before their lesson. Thank you!

    Everyone should have received a "Tradition of Excellence" Book 1. All the sax players should have books now since I went to the store last night after the rental meeting. If any drummers received a Breeze Easy book 1, please tell me immediately so I can get that book back to the store and get you the correct book. If anyone else not have that book for your child's instrument please contact me immediately and send me in $12 so I can get it for you from the store. The children have a chance to try the band instruments at the "Instrument Petting Zoo" and some have changed their mind as to what they would like to play next year already!     Congratulations to all the 3rd grade students on your great performance today! I hope that many of your children choose to sign up for band in 4th grade. The pink form should come home with them today. If they lost it or forgot it, you may also print one from the Band Forms and Documents portion of my website located in the left column. There are other great resources there as well, such as famous people that played in band when they were growing up, like Jimmy Kimmel that played the clarinet!

    The spring concert will be held Wednesday May 10 at 10:00 AM in the Valley gymnasium. The order of bands is Jazz Ensemble, Middle School Band, Elementary Band, and Beginning Band. Parents are encouraged to stay for the entire program, but if you need to leave to return to work please do so during one of the bands finishes their portion of the program. Thank you.

If you child is forgetful or does not bring one home, there is one posted in the "Band Forms and Documents" section of the website for you to view and print at your leisure. Please remember that concert attire is "Black and White" and must meet school dress code.

    Parents:
    Even though there were new lesson schedules posted and there was a posting on this page, the majority of students were not prepared for today's elementary band class. The elementary band will need their instruments Wednesday to help with beginning band. This will be held Wednesday April 12 during period 7 from 1:18-1:58.
    Please make sure that music is prepared for this rehearsal. The 4th grade students have been practicing their music since January. The older students have all had the music for over a month. If they didn't receive it that means that they skipped band when it was handed out. Since lesson attendance has been poor we have not had time to play through most of it. Plus we had the week of 4 snow days! Castles and Kings and Let's Go Band should be easy to remember for the 5th and 6th grade students. Ode to Joy and Shark Attack are simple enough pieces that with a little practice between now and then the elementary band members with a year more of playing experience should be able to play with the 4th graders. Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.

    GALLERY NIGHT has been moved to May 8 from 6:00-7:30. The jazz ensemble will be performing at 6 in the band room. After that, a small group will be performing duets and trios.

    CONCERT UPDATE!!! The Spring Concert date has changed! The spring concert will now be held on Wednesday, May 10, at 10:00 AM in the gymnasium. There was a conflict with two middle school students and we also needed to work around the Keystone exams for some 8th grade students.

    JAZZ ENSEMBLE MEMBERS - Due to the Middle School Dance, the rehearsal for Friday, February 10 has been cancelled. Attendance for the next three weeks after that is mandatory unless absent from school so we can get ready for the Laurel Mall Gig on March 4.

    Jazz Ensemble sectionals will be starting on Thursdays or Fridays. The group is comprised of mostly 7th and 8th graders with select elementary students. Over the next few weeks, I will be asking select students to stay after school to work on music for the first full rehearsal coming up in January. They will be with me until 5:00 and may be picked up in the parent pickup lot. Here's the tentative schedule:

    Information went home this week about the honors band program at the high school from January 3 to March 14, 2017. This is a great program that only school districts like ours can offer! Please follow this link for more information:
     
     
    The winter concert is coming up quickly on December 16 at 10 AM in the gymnasium. Please make sure your children are practicing their music. Elementary band rehearsal will go much more smoothly if EVERYONE is prepared by practicing and having their instruments!
     
    Concert dress is usually an issue for some because of growing out of the old clothes or shoes. Please secure that stuff early for your child. White top and black pants for girls or all black is fine. White dress shirt, colorful tie, and black pants for boys. Black shoes for everyone. Black sneakers are fine as long as they are mostly black. Please email me with any questions about attire.

    The first week of lessons for beginners went very well. Please make sure your children are practicing 20-30 minutes every day. If there is a day that they cannot practice, make up a little each day. The best time for practicing is the day of the lesson right when the children get home. This way things are still fresh in their minds. Practicing for 2 hours the night before lessons does not do any good. Slow and steady wins the race!
     
    Lessons and band rotate through the school day so that students will not constantly miss the same classes. For example, if they miss swimming class one week they will not miss that class again for quite some time. Students must ask permission from their classroom teachers before coming to my room for lessons and band. The only reason that most teachers will hold students is if they are giving a major exam. If they get their test done early, then the student may still come to the rest of the lesson or band rehearsal.

    Any students that do not have a Tradition of Excellence Book 1 (grades 4-6) or Book 2 (Grades 7-8) should bring in a check made payable to Robert M. Sides so I can order it for the school year. Most are $11.60, except for French horn ($12.20) and Percussion ($14.31). Please place in an envelope with the student name and "Book Money" written on the envelope. If you are in need of any other supplies, please see Mr. Fadden for assistance. Most supplies can be ordered through Robert M. Sides and delivered to the school on Thursdays.

    Welcome back! Band lessons and rehearsals will not start until the building schedule is finalized.
     
    Middle School Students - Mrs. Brior and I are looking at Tuesday and Wednesday for Middle School Band during FLEX. This is something that the middle school teachers have all agreed is best. Therefore, once we start rehearsing attendance is MANDATORY. There is no reason that I should have to go chasing a trumpet player, etc., because they don't feel like coming that day. We have a concert in December for which to prepare. There is no time to waste. Lessons will likely rotate on Mondays and Thursdays through what periods I have available.
     
    Elementary Band - Elementary Band rehearsals will likely be Wednesdays. Lessons will likely be Tuesdays and Fridays. We have a concert in December for which to prepare as well!
     
    Beginner Lessons - Any parent/guardian of 4th grade students may enroll their child in band this month for the 2016-17 school year. Enrollment forms were handed out to every student in June but still are available. I have received over 50 back so far! If that information did not make it home, it is available in the Band Forms and Documents portion of my website in the left hand column.
     
    Lessons will tentatively be on Wednesdays. I hope this will be better for the 4th grade teachers than the schedule last year. Beginners who have their instruments which are in playing condition as determined by me last year need to get a book, music stand and care kit. If you found Uncle Fester's instrument in a closet over the summer, you MUST bring it in to me this week so I can determine if it will play or if it will need repairs and must be sent out. If you did not obtain an instrument yet, the rental meeting sponsored by Robert M. Sides Family Music Center is Thursday, September 22 at 6:00 PM in the Valley cafeteria.
     
    PLEASE do not buy an instrument from Amazon or eBay. You are wasting your money in the long run unless you know what to look for. Just because it is shaped like a clarinet does not mean that it will last more than a few months without significant repairs being necessary. I've been doing this for 20 years and I do not want any parent to waste their hard earned money on something that will eventually break and not fixable.

    The Wilkes University Civic Band presents "Made In PA", a concert of music by composers with their roots in Pennsylvania. The concert will take place at the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Wilkes University. The Darte Center is on the corners of South and West River Streets. The concert begins at 7:30 PM and should last about an hour and a half. I will be a featured soloist with the group performing Sammy Nestico's "Persuasion" on alto saxophone.     On Wednesday, April 27, I invite you all to attend a concert in Wilkes-Barre. I will be performing in concert with the Wilkes Civic Band at Wilkes University's Darte Center for the Performing Arts. The free concert begins at 7:30 PM and will feature the world premiere of several pieces for band, as well as a solo I will be performing with the band called "Persuasion" by Sammy Nestico. I talked about this concert in December and this will be quite an event. You will not want to miss it!

    There were a record number of students selected for the PMEA District 9 Band Fest this year...12 total! 5 elementary students and 7 middle school students will be representing Valley EMS this year at Tunkhannock HS on April 29. I should be receiving music this weekend for the fest. Participants will receive a bus permission slip, folder and music along with lots of important paperwork to be filled out and returned to me. These need to be filled out and returned to me by March 24 so Mrs. Brior can sign off on them and I can send it all back to the festival host.

    If your child is a beginner and they do not have their instrument yet, they need to have it by next Friday, Oct. 9. If it is ordered from Robert M. Sides and out of stock (like a tenor sax) that is a special circumstance. If you have contacted me about borrowing an instrument (2 parents have thus far) until you get one, that's fine too. But there are kids that haven't even attempted to get instruments yet. So the deadline is October 8th...next Thursday...otherwise your child will have to wait until next year.

    The first lesson schedule for this year is posted under lesson schedule. I lost 6 lesson periods for instrumental lessons and now have to teach more general music. So I am using all of my planning periods to make up for the loss. Please make sure that your child is coming to their lesson at their assigned times. If they do not follow the rotation, they may miss more frequently. Since most students 4-6 have their major subject areas such as math for 80 minutes, they will still have half of that class if they come to my 40 minute lesson. Thank you.

    Will band interfere with student’s grades in other classes? NO! It has been found that students participating in school instrumental music programs generally average higher grades in other subjects. Your child needs to complete any work missed during lessons, but most teachers are flexible as long as your child does their work.

     

    How much does my child need to practice? With more and more homework being assigned at the elementary school level, I ask that the beginning band member practices a minimum of 20 minutes each night. If this is done 6 out of 7 nights, I am only asking 2 hours total out of the week. This can be broken up into two 10 min. sessions (before and after dinner). CONSISTENT practice makes the beginner stronger, not 2 hours the night before lessons. This will be tracked with a practice chart signed by you weekly. Even if your child is in other activities, 20 minutes is reasonable. I work very hard to be flexible with the students about lessons. I was always involved in sports and band. Flexibility and compromise are keys to success.

     

    Will my child be cut from the band? NO! Your child will have a spot in band, but every position needs to be filled. Just like on any sports team, each position needs to be filled. Band directors call it “balanced instrumentation”. The only time someone is “cut” is if they do not show up for lessons or if they are not practicing. There is a need for committed clarinet and sax players this year, but numbers may be limited depending on interest. The number of beginning drummers will definitely be limited. The only reason a student is "cut" is if they choose not to show up for their lessons.

     

    Can I afford to rent an instrument? Robert M. Sides makes it easy for families to rent an instrument. If your family is unable to afford the cost of leasing an instrument, please contact me for further options. I do have some school brass instruments (trumpets, French horns, trombones, baritones, tubas) available if there are true cases of financial hardship on a first come first serve basis. I will be happy to loan a brass instrument to those families if possible. I would ask that anyone chosen to use a school instrument commit to playing for the entire school year. This will be tracked with a practice chart signed by you weekly. Even if your child is in other activities, 20 minutes is reasonable. I work very hard to be flexible with the students about lessons. I was always involved in sports and band. Flexibility and compromise are keys to success.

     

    Will my child be cut from the band? NO! Your child will have a spot in band, but every position needs to be filled. Just like on any sports team, each position needs to be filled. Band directors call it “balanced instrumentation”. The only time someone is “cut” is if they do not show up for lessons or if they are not practicing. There is a need for committed clarinet and sax players this year, but numbers may be limited depending on interest. The number of beginning drummers will definitely be limited.

     

    Can I afford to rent an instrument? Robert M. Sides makes it easy for families to rent an instrument. If your family is unable to afford the cost of leasing an instrument, please contact me for further options. I do have some school brass instruments (trumpets, French horns, trombones, baritones, tubas) available if there are true cases of financial hardship on a first come first serve basis. I will be happy to loan a brass instrument to those families if possible. I would ask that anyone chosen to use a school instrument commit to playing for the entire school year.     All elementary and middle school (intermediate) band fest participants must be at the high school band room at 7AM on Friday April 24. The bus leaves at 7:15 AM for the Scranton Cultural Center. There is no bus coming home. Students must bring their instrument, music, a music stand, and appropriate black attire for the concert (they may also wear this). All students will receive a t-shirt to wear on top for the concert. Lunch and dinner will be provided. After the concert all parents must sign out their child at the tables located in the lobby of the Cultural Center.

    Any Elementary Band Fest, Intermediate Band Fest, or Jazz Fest participant MUST return their paperwork to me Friday, March 20. That's what I told the students when I handed them their forms. Mrs. Brior needs to sign off on them and they need to be sent to the fest coordinator next week.

    About the concert and commissioned piece…

    The Honors Concert Band and Honors Wind Ensemble are comprised of students from every part of the school district. The combined groups will be performing a commissioned work entitled “Angela Park Celebration” by composer Rob Walker. This will be the grand finale to our Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM) Concert on Tuesday, March 17. The concert starts at 7pm at the HAHS Auditorium. The concert also features the Honors Jazz Ensemble and High School Band. Tickets are sold at the door. Admission for the event is $5 for adults and $4 for seniors/students. There will also be a Chorus on March 19, 2015.

     

    Mr. Jim Fitcher, who is helping us with the fundraiser, has a passion for the history of the park and has been a great help with this project. He assembled our slide show to go along with the performance of the piece. Some of his collection of photos is posted on the public Facebook page for Angela Park. Mr. Fred Barletta has also aided us with pictures and slides from the park taken when he was a boy.

    Here are some notes about the piece from the composer:

    In doing research for this piece, I was fortunate to have gained the support of the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum in North Tonawanda NY.  According to Shirley Burgess of the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum, the Carrousel, and the Tank, Airplane, and Boats rides were all manufactured by the North Tonawanda Allan Herschell Factory. By tracing the model and year of the Carrousel, we determined that the music was produced by a Wurlitizer Band Organ.

    Doug Hershberger of the Wurlitzer Department of the Museum, was able to suggest the most likely music to be played on this particular style of band organ. Angela Park Celebration contains several of these familiar tunes. Visitors to the park likely heard these pieces playing throughout the park during their visits to Angela Park.

    The piece begins with a theme that was frequently heard on Angela Park radio commercials over the years. “It’s a good day for every one, it’s a good day for having fun”.  This motive is used throughout the piece. The theme gives way to Over The Waves and Ben Hur’s Chariot Race. The piece then winds its way over for an auditory ride on the Valley Coaster. The Skater’s Waltz and Under the Double Eagle round out this exciting visit to the park.

    Good news! Valley had 3 students selected for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 9 Jazz Fest. This event is on Saturday, April 18, at the Scranton Cultural Center at 7:00 PM
     
    Valley also has had 11 students selected for the PMEA Elementary Band Fest and 5 students selected for the Intermediate Band Fest. Both bands will perform at the Scranton Cultural Center on Friday, April 24 at 7:00 PM. Congratulations to everyone!

    Happy New Year! Lessons start up again on Monday. All students will be receiving band music for their spring concert, so attendance is vital! All students should come during their scheduled lesson time unless they are taking a major exam.
     
    Honors Band auditions for Wind Ensemble is Tuesday evening 1/6 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the HAHS Music Suite. Students auditioning for this group must attend and should bring their instruments and audition materials. Otherwise students will be placed in concert band.     Here's what I do in my free time on Wednesday nights! You can see me on the right side playing alto saxophone. My wife Michele is playing crash cymbals. This is the world premiere of the march "Invincible" by Eugene Magalif, performed by the Wilkes University Civic Band. The original composer's music may have been lost forever if it was not for Mr. Magalif arranging this work, which consists of themes from other works. There was no printed sheet music from which to copy. This was all done by the memory that he had from his father playing the music for him on the piano.

    I want to pass on to parents how well the bands are playing this year thus far. Our concert in December should be a great one! Please note that our Winter Concert will be held Friday, December 19 at 10:00 AM in the gymnasium.  Please mark this on your calendar. Students will be given a letter to take home as in the past. Please note that the 4th grade students do not participate in this program. Their first concert is not until May.

If you have not rented an instrument from Robert M. Sides, you may fill out an application online and the instrument will be delivered to the school.     The newest lesson schedule is posted at the link to the left side of the screen. All the beginner names have been added for which I received forms. If your child's name is not on the lesson schedule in the appropriate instrument group, please have them see me Tuesday morning or Wednesday during their appropriately assigned time.
     
    Not everyone was at the rental meetings, so if you still need and instrument please see me on Tuesday or go to Robert M. Sides in Wilkes Barre on Monday or Tuesday to start the process. They have received a shipment since our meeting. Instrument contracts are being filled in the order received. You should be able to also do it online at rmsides.com and our code is J3MRR, but the instrument may not be here until after Wednesday.
     
    If you obtain an instrument from another source, it must be approved by me first. If it's used, it may need extensive repairs and you might be better off renting. If new, all that glitters is not gold! Don't waste your money on a piece of junk from eBay and end up with a $200 lamp! There are many inferior "instrument shaped objects" that people sell. It's not worth mentioning any names, because the same factories make most of the instruments and stamp any name you like on the bell!

If you plan on using another source, you should have your child bring the instrument to school in playing condition on Wednesday.  They must also have the correct book (Tradition of Excellence Book 1) or $10 to purchase one.     Attention returning band members! The new lesson schedule is posted at the link on the left side of my page. Please check for your name and when your lesson time is during the week. Things have changed significantly from last year.
     
    • 5th grade lessons are mostly on Mondays and Tuesdays
    • 4th grade (and a few other beginners) lessons are on Wednesdays
    • 6th grade lessons are mostly on Thursdays with the exception of saxophones
    • Fridays are mostly middle school lessons
    • The bass players lesson group will be on Tuesdays for now
    • Middle school band will be held on Wednesdays just like last year.
    • Elementary band will be held on Fridays this year.
    • Bells, oboes and bassoons will be after school.

    Thank you to all the students, parents, faculty, and staff for helping to make our concert Friday a success! For the students, Friday there will be a movie shown as a reward. Disney's "Frozen" will be shown to band members, and certificates will be handed out for participation in band. Some teachers have made special accomodations in their classes to make this happen (thank you Mrs. Eisenberg!).  I will also be handing out music to practice over the summer for our December Winter Concert, which includes music from Frozen as well as some other holiday music.

    If your child has not received their new band music for the Spring concert, that means that they are missing lessons and band. They must see me first thing on Tuesday morning!
     
    For the 3rd marking period, lessons will be only held from 9:00 AM to 11:30 each day. Then I leave for the Drums school to teach 7th grade general music. Some middle school lessons may start at 8:30 as well. Please have your child check the lesson schedule to see when their lesson will be held.

    On Wednesday, November 13, the middle school band will do a brief informal performance of "Armed Forces March" for Valley's Veteran's Day in the band room at 9:30 for the visiting veterans.     I found this great article on the Steinway Musical Instruments website. This will provide you with insight as to what a band director like myself has to deal with and why "we are the way we are":
     
     
    Your child's band director

    Have you met the dedicated teacher who serves as your child's band or orchestra director? Maybe you had a chance to talk to him or her at "band night" or "rental night." If not, make sure to introduce yourself at a parent-teacher conference or after a performance. If you have pressing concerns or questions, simply set up a time to meet privately.

    Like most teachers, the band director is responsible for lesson plans, grading, discipline, and the many other duties faced by those who have dedicated their lives to education. In addition, however, the band director is an administrator, fund-raiser, drill instructor, instrument repairman, conductor and "most important" a musician. The director's mission is not only to instruct your child, but to inspire your child.

    Both your child and the band program as a whole will benefit greatly if you, as a supportive band parent, make the effort to become an ally of the director. The simplest way to build this relationship is to stay in touch. You'll want to attend any scheduled conferences, of course, but you should also feel welcome to phone or e-mail the director to ask about your child's progress. Most directors will be more than happy to spend the time with you.

    Keep in mind that the band director may teach more children than any other faculty member in the school. Bands and orchestras are large groups, and the band director may be responsible for hundreds of students, so it's impossible to work closely with each child individually. If you feel that your child is struggling, by all means, make time to discuss the problem with the director, who may recommend private instruction or advise you regarding better practice methods at home.

    Many young musicians find that band is their favorite school activity. Not surprisingly, the director becomes not just a teacher, but a friend and mentor. Your own supportive relationship with the band director can help strengthen the respect that is the basis of your child's relationship to the director.

    You can help instill the disciplines that are necessary for your child to succeed within a large group. Every school band program has its rules and regulations. These are typical:

    • Be on time.
    • Attend all rehearsals and performances, unless excused by the director.
    • Be attentive and courteous during rehearsals.
    • No eating, drinking or gum-chewing during practice.
    • Take proper care of music and instruments.
    • Practice daily at home.

    The beginning of the school year means band time! Students that were in band last year are enrolled this year automatically. If your child has not taken advantage of our instrumental lesson program, I work very hard to give all students an opportunity to be a part of the band program. If your child was not here at Valley last year, please email me at faddent@hasdk12.org with as much information as you can give me so I can find your child before the rental meetings, which are Thursday September 19 from 6-8 PM in our cafeteria, or the Tuesday before that, which is September 17 at the Castle (HEMS) from 6-8 PM in the cafeteria (basement). This is especially important for students in grades 4 through 8.

    Next week will be the last lessons for the school year. The following week I will have certificates for everyone who participated in the spring concert.

    The most common thing that I hear from students is "We cannot afford it", but that is in most cases because either the child or the parent thinks that they need to buy an instrument right away. This is not the case at all! There is a rental program available through two very fine companies that makes playing a band instrument affordable to all the students.
     
    RENTAL NIGHT INFORMATION
    There are two very fine companies in the area that will be visiting Valley Elementary/Middle School on Thursday, September 19th from 6:00-8:00 PM in the cafeteria. Robert M. Sides Family Music Center from Wilkes-Barre and Carbon County Music and More from Lehighton. RMS is based in Williamsport, PA and has several locations throughout PA and NY. Carbon County Music has a store in Lehighton and obtains their instruments from Menchey Music near Harrisburg in Hanover, which has several locations throughout Southern PA.
     
    Both companies offer a trial rental/lease period of 3 months. Robert M. Sides will also provide a starter pack with the book we use as well as a music stand and a cleaning kit all for $19.95 with the first payment usually due sometime in December or January with no credit check. You will also take home an instrument that night. With Menchey Music's program (offered through Carbon County Music and More) the book, cleaning kit and music stand are purchased separately and there is a credit check in order to rent/lease. Both programs build up credit towards the purchase of the instrument each month once you make your first payment. Copies of the lease contract are available from either company at the rental night meeting for you to fill out.

    If you are unable to go to the rental meeting, there is also one on Tuesday September 17th at Hazle EMS (the Castle) in the cafeteria from 6:00-8:00 PM. Sides, you must enter J3MRR when asked for the rental code to get the 3 months free rental.

    There are still a few students forgetting their instruments and music for lessons and band. Please make sure your children have their band stuff right by the door the night before band rehearsal. If you drive your children to school, even putting it in the car the night before would be a possibility!

    Lessons will only be held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays for the 4th marking period. Beginning band rehearsal will be on Fridays. All 4th grade students should have their instrument EVERY Friday! Those students who have on Tuesdays and Wednesdays will need to bring their instrument to school TWICE each week.

    Congratulations to the students selected for the PMEA District 9 Intermediate Jazz Fest at Tunkhannock Area High School on March 15, 2013. We have 2 students from Valley Middle School representing our band program there. Congratulations to the 7 students selected for Intermediate Band Fest and Elementary Band Fest at Lakeland Jr./Sr. High School on April 5, 2013. This is the first time that our school has had so many students selected to represent our music program! If you were selected, please get your paperwork into Mr. Fadden as soon as possible!

    Please make sure your children are practicing their music at home for their concert on May 10. If they miss their 30 minutes of instruction once a week on their instrument and or their 30 minutes of band per week, I do not see them at all. So they receive no instruction that week. It is unfair to the other students in the group to have to go back and reteach things they already know or go over music measure by measure because they cannot remember basics like fingerings that are located in their fingering chart in the back of their book. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

    Many students have been asking "When is the concert?" The answer is Friday, December 14 at 10:00 AM in the Valley Gymnasium. Students are required to wear black and white as in previous performances. Any accessories (ties, socks, scarves) that are "festive" are also acceptable as long as they do not interfere with the performance For example, please do not have your trumpet playing child put twinkle lights on their bells. Nor should people in the first row wear gigantic elf or santa hats (nor anyone else for that matter!) Thank you for your discretion. THIS CONCERT DOES NOT INCLUDE BEGINNERS. Their first performance will be in May.

    An Important Note for Parents/Guardians:
    I will never turn away a child from my program due to financial reasons. For these circumstances, we are sometimes able to lend school instruments until parents are able to obtain an instrument for their child. Today, three students informed me of their situations and I will find something for them to get started with for 4th grade. The instruments we have here are older and might not be the prettiest, but they are clean and in playing condition. Please do not hesitate to contact me, Mr. Donadi or Mrs. Brior if we can help get your child started.
     
    As the beginners start upon their path to musical greatness, please let your children know that they must stay current with all homework and class assignments for their regular education teachers. Students will not be allowed to attend if they are not doing their work.
     
    PARENTS: If you were unable to attend the rental meeting Thursday night, it is NOT too late for your child to start band this year. I have contracts for both companies on hand. If you come in I will walk you through the contract so we can get your child the instrument of their choice.
     
    If your schedule does not permit stopping at school, I recommend filling out the application online or going to Sides or CCM. This way, any personal information needed by either company will remain confidential. Identity theft is a big issue in today's electronic world. Both companies have secure websites. Your information will be safe with them.

    I have received and photocopied contract information from Carbon County Music and More. Information will be given to 4th grade students before they leave school Friday. If your child did not receive information regarding the rental program for Robert M. Sides or Carbon County Music and More please stop by my room at open house on Monday night, September 10th, from 6-7:30 PM.
     
    Lesson for current band members will start next week. The lesson schedule will be posted on my website and emailed to teachers over the weekend. All elementary band members should plan on bringing their instruments for band on Tuesday, September 11th. Middle school band members should plan on bringing their instruments for band on Wednesday, September 12th.

    The instrument flyer for Robert M. Sides Family Music Center will be distributed to 4th grade students on Friday. It has also been posted to the "Band Forms and Documents" section of my website. If you cannot attend the meeting on Thursday, September 20th at 6-8 PM in the Valley Cafeteria, please try to attend the meeting at the Castle on Tuesday, September 18th 6-8 PM in the cafeteria. If you cannot attend either, you may fill out the forms online.

    3rd grade screening for band was completed in June, but it is not too late for your child to start playing a band instrument! I will distribute forms from Robert M. Sides and Carbon County Music about the rental meetings to the current 4th grade students in the next few days. Some children have discovered that they would like to try an instrument that they have not chosen! As with any sports team, all positions in the band need to be filled. I will not be accepting any more saxophone students or beginning battery percussion students (drummers) for next year, but everything else is open.     Rental nights have been set for September. The rental night for Valley Elementary is Thursday, September 20th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the school cafeteria. Vendors from Robert M. Sides and Carbon County Music and More will be there giving presentations on their lease to own programs. If you cannot attend that night, an alternate night is being held at Hazle Elementary (the Castle) on Tuesday, September 18th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the basement cafeteria. All of the instruments provided by these companies have been sanitized and are approved by the instrumental music teachers of the Hazleton Area School District. These music stores may also have instruments available for purchase. Some names to look for: Yamaha, Jupiter, Conn, King, Selmer, Vito, Holton, Accent, and Andreas Eastman. Any instruments obtained from any other source must be approved by Mr. Fadden before your child starts lessons. Please plan on attending the meeting on Thursday, September 20, if your child will be starting band this year. Thank you.
     
     
    Every child in band at Valley should purchase a 1" Avery 3 Ring Binder (or similar...get one that will last more than a year) that will lie flat on a music stand. In addition, please purchase a package of non-glare page protectors (around 10 would be fine...enough to store about 20 pages). They usually come in packs of 25, but these have many great uses for other classes as well. WalMart has them for less than $4. This will be where the students will keep their band music and handouts from me throughout the year. I am doing this to avoid lost and damaged band music.
     
    Think that used instrument on eBay is a good deal? Germs linger in the mouthpieces, reeds, and tuning slides of every instrument. If your child is playing an 'inherited' instrument, you need to read this NPR story from 2010 entitled "Think Music Heals? Trombone Player Begs To Differ":
     
     
    I have thoroughly cleaned all of our instruments over the summer, but here is another story you should read. One of those instruments on eBay might be surplus from a high school band program:
     
     
    The finest quality student model instrument is not worth anything when it has been misused or abused by someone else. If you see something that you might think is a good deal, email me at faddent@hasdk12.org with the details and I will tell you if it's worth it. I had to repair 2 NEW instruments bought on the internet because of the lack of quality control. If I didn't know a little about instrument repair, these instruments would have been unplayable. The metal brass parts bend very easily and will not last as long. Most repair shops will not guarantee work on these 'off the internet' instruments. Last school year, by far the worst instruments that I encountered off of eBay was the Cecilio brand. Other brands that have been not fixable since I started at Valley were Hawk and E.M. Winston. "Teacher approved" does not mean "Fadden Approved"! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THESE INFERIOR INSTRUMENTS! If an instrument is purchased and I did not approve it, I cannot waste my time or the instructional time of my students fixing the inferior purchase.
     
    Parents of children who are starting snare drum need to order sticks, the Vater or Vic Firth rubber drum pad (no REMO pads), a Breeze Easy book, and a folding music stand. I have extra sticks from Guitar Center that I purchased over the summer for the beginners. They are $5. If you have not obtained these materials yet, you may order them from Robert M. Sides or Carbon County Music and More on Thursday night. If you need the paper with the requirements, please download it from the Band Forms and Documents section of my website. If you order it online, please make sure that it is the right thing before you order. Locally, you can order from Robert M.
