    About Title One

The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education.  Title I provides financial assistance to schools for children from low-income families to help ensure challenging state academic standards are met.

The Hazleton Area School District operates a Title I Schoolwide Program. Under a Schoolwide Program, funds may be utilized to support academic areas identified as needing improvement. The purpose of the Schoolwide comprehensive reform strategy is to upgrade the entire educational program with a focus of raising achievement of under-performing students. Teachers will differentiate instruction based on assessment data to provide individualized instruction to meet students' academic needs.

    Title I Success
Parental involvement is one of the most important elements in the success of the Title I program.
    Parents:
    • Determine program goals
    • Collaboratively work with staff to increase student achievement
    • Assist in the planning and implementation of Parent and Family Engagement activities
    • Evaluate the programs' success

Title I meetings are important to learn more about Title I, provide input, and collaborate with other parents, teachers, and administrators.

    •  District Parent Advisory Committee meetings are held twice a year
    •  Individual school Parent Advisory Committee meetings are held monthly

    Title I Funding
Each year, the U.S. Federal Government allocates funds to Pennsylvania and other states for Title I.  Pennsylvania must submit a plan to receive these funds.  The plan describes:

    •  The performance standards that children are expected to meet
    •  Ways to measure how well students are meeting performance standards

In HASD public schools, Title I eligibility is determined by the percent of students eligible for free & reduced lunches enrolled in a school based on the January (preceding year) count.  In schools with more that 40% poverty, programs are designed to help improve academic achievment and the overall quality of the school.

The non-public schools within our district operate a targeted assistance program, where at-risk students are identified and receive supplemental support.
