• Cosmetology Course Syllabus

     

    1250 HOURS

     

    DESCRIPTION: The primary purpose of the Cosmetology Course is to train the student in the basic manipulative skills, safety judgments, proper work habits, and desirable attitudes necessary to achieve competency in entry-level job skills, obtain licensure, and obtain gainful employment in the field of cosmetology or related career fields.

     

    OBJECTIVES:

    Upon completion of the course requirements, the determined graduate will be able to:

    1. Project a positive attitude, a sense of personal integrity, and self-confidence.
    2. Practice effective communication skills, visual poise, and proper grooming.
    3. Respect the need to deliver worthy service for value received in an employer–employee relationship.
    4. Perform the basic manipulative skills in the areas of hair care, skin care, and nail care.
    5. Perform the basic analytical skills to determine appropriate hair care, skin care, and nail care services to achieve the best total look for each client.
    6. Apply academic and practical learning and related information to ensure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures.

    To ensure continued career success, the graduate will continue to learn new and current information related to skills, trends, and methods for career development in cosmetology and related fields.

     

    REFERENCES: A comprehensive resource center of references, periodicals, books, texts, audio/video, and online resources are available to support the course of study and supplement student training.

    Students should avail themselves of the opportunity to use these extensive materials.

     

    TEACHING METHODS: The clock-hour education is provided through a sequential set of learning steps that address specific tasks necessary for state board preparation, graduation, NOCTI and entry-level job skills. Student salon equipment, implements, and products are comparable to those used in the industry.

    Each student will receive instruction that relates to the performance of useful, creative, and productive career-oriented activities. The course is presented through comprehensive lesson plans that reflect effective educational methods. Subjects are presented by means of interactive lecture, demonstration, and student participation. Audio-visual aids, guest speakers, field trips, projects, activities, and other related learning methods are incorporated throughout the course of study.

     

    GRADING PROCEDURES: Students are assigned academic learning units and a minimum number of practical experiences required for course completion. Academic learning is evaluated after each unit of study. Practical skills learning is evaluated as completed and counted toward course completion only when rated as satisfactory or better. Practical skills are evaluated according to text procedures as set forth in the Practical Grading Sheet. Students must maintain a grade average of 70 percent or higher. Students must make up failed or missed tests and incomplete assignments. Missed work must be completed and turned in prior to quarter ending to receive credit. Numerical grades are considered according to the following scale:

     

    Theory Work-30%

    Practical Tasks-30%

    Tests and/or Projects-25%

    Class Duties and Participation-15%

     

    1250 TOTAL HOURS

    The above hour requirements must be met by each student within the three years in the cosmetology program in order for the earned hours to be accepted by the Pa. State Board for examination. If the 1250 hours are not met after the three year enrollment then students must enroll in a private beauty school at their expense and complete the remaining hours within one year. All 1250 hours must be completed in a 4 year time frame or all hours are void.

     

    Hours are earned for class attendance as follows:

     

    Level 1= 1.5 hours per day

         1.5hr x 180 days = 270 hours first year

    Level 2 and 3= 3 hours per day

          3hr x 180 days= 540 each second and third year for a total of 1350 hours

     

    Additional hours are gained through extra activities if you choose to participate

    The Cosmetology program is governed by the Pa. State Board and sets forth rules and regulations that all students, teachers, schools, salons and licensed professionals must follow.

    The rules that apply to students include each student must have a kit that contains outlined items as set forth from the board. A list of such items will be provided to you. The law further states that all students must be in a uniform while in cosmetology class. The uniform is black scrub pants and black scrub top with black or white leather professional shoes. Students may wear a solid black or white long sleeve shirt under their uniform.

    To comply with state board rules all students must have a text book which will be provided and must be in school while you are present. Each student must compile a binder which consists of notes, hand-outs and procedure sheets.

    The state regularly inspects with no notice so all rules must be followed to avoid a possible fine for non-compliance.
