- Local scholarships are sponsored by our community for Hazleton Area students that meet the criteria set by the sponsor.
- Most scholarships are a one-time financial award, but there are some instances where some are renewable (the scholarship sponsor will let you know if that is the case).
- Scholarships are presented to students at our awards ceremony unless a sponsor decides to present the award at one of their local club meetings or at a special ceremony.
- Please read through each scholarship and see that you have filled out and handed in all that the sponsor is requiring.

Local Scholarships:
The Luzerne Learns to Work Scholarship Luzerne Learns to Work will be awarding $1,000 scholarships to ten (10) students in Luzerne County. These will be awarded to students who are seniors in a Luzerne County high school. Have completed a learning pathway through the Luzerne Learns to Work program. Will be pursuing post-secondary education at an accredited institution in Luzerne County. The review and evaluation process will take place in April, and scholarships will be awarded in May.West Hazleton Lions Club Scholarship Eligibility Requirements 1. Scholarships of $500 each will be awarded to 2 graduating high school seniors. 2. Students must be from the former West Hazleton High School District boundaries (prior to 1993): • Banks Township • Black Creek Township • Conyngham Borough • East Union Township • Hazle Township • North Union Township • Sugarloaf Township • West Hazleton Borough. The deadline is May 17, 2025.
Wilkes Barre UNICO Scholarship. The candidate shall be of Italian descent. (Must have 1 parent or grandparent of Italian origin). The deadline is May 30, 2025.
Twin County Lions Scholarship Application: Please make graduating Seniors aware of the following opportunity. The Twin County LIONS Club will once again give two $1,000 awards for students from our service area. Our service area includes East Union Township, North Unio Township, Black Creek Township, Parts of Sugarloaf Township west of Yost Road and Tomhickon, All of Eagle Rock Resort including Hazle Twp. portion. Robert G. Stetz Memorial Scholarship. STEM senior student interested in pursuing a career in engineering and/or a science-related field. The deadline is May 15, 2025.
The Geraldine S. Shepperson Memorial Award. Must be active in community service/volunteerism. 3.0 GPA and must be pursuing a 4-year college/university. The deadline is May 15, 2025.
HAZLETON CHAPTER OF UNICO 2025 SCHOLARSHIP (Flyer) National is an Italian-American Service Organization. The Hazleton Chapter, founded in 1950, was the first one chartered in the state of Pennsylvania. UNICO is an acronym that stands for Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity, and Opportunity, and our motto is “Service Above Self”. Our goal is to give back to our local community by providing assistance to local area organizations and to award high school students an annual scholarship to help with post secondary costs in an academic or technical school program of study. The Hazleton Chapter of UNICO will be awarding a $1500 scholarship to each of four students selected by a panel of independent judges. We will be awarding two students who have been accepted to an academic 2 or 4 year college and two students who have been accepted to a trade/technical school. All the requirements below must be completed by May 1st, 2025. Recipients will be notified by June 1st, 2025, and will be presented with their checks by Unico members. The Drums Lioness Lions Club will offer a $1000 award to a 12th grade young woman with a Conyngham, Drums, or Sugarloaf address who acts as a leader among her peers and is dedicated to community service and volunteerism. Are you applying to King's College? Are you interested in becoming a teacher? This is a scholarship once you are a third year student at King's College. This is a scholarship to be aware of. The National Science Foundation (NSF) Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program awards funds to recruit and mentor K-12 math and science teachers. At King’s College, our Noyce Scholars Program is called PRIMES (Preparing and Retaining Inclusive and Mentored Educators in STEM). Rising junior and senior students in a STEM major with at least a 3.0 GPA are eligible to apply. Other majors this scholarship applies to are Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Environmental and Ecological Science, Environmental and Sustainability Studies, General Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Neuroscience, and Physics. JOHN GOULD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Presented by: The Kiwanis Club of The Valley/Conyngham. In order to be eligible for this award, the student must have attended either, Valley, Drums or Freeland Elementary/Middle School and had been a member of the Builders Club in that school. Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation Offers Essay Scholarships, Harrisburg, PA— The Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation’s (PHF’s) mission to help preserve the Commonwealth’s rich heritage includes supporting the next generation of scholars and encouraging their enthusiasm for Pennsylvania History. For our second annual PHF Essay Scholarship, we are asking applicants to prepare an essay of up to 1,500 words about a person, location, or event that has been underrecognized in Pennsylvania History. Two cash awards of $1,000 and three cash awards of $500 will be presented for the best essays received. We will be looking for well-written and thoughtfully articulated essays that elevate the topic with originality and understanding. The Program – administered through The Foundation for Enhancing Communities – is for graduating high school seniors who reside in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. TFEC awards two four-year scholarships to high school seniors each year. The award consists of the value of one semester of tuition at the State System of Higher Education for each of four years. Each year, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation awards 150 college scholarships worth $20,000 to high school students across the United States through the Coca-Cola Scholars Program. For Juniors & Seniors: The Hazleton Rotary Club and Rotary District 7410 are again sponsoring an essay contest with a cash prize. Please share the contest information and attached guidelines with your respective students who are juniors or seniors in high school. This year’s theme is: Rotary’s Four Way Test, which guides all Rotary projects, includes this question: “Is it fair to all concerned?” It asks, “that we use empathy to see other points of view, in the context of problems to be solved.” How can we use teamwork, inclusion, empathy, acceptance, belonging, and accountability to solve problems, or achieve the goals we set?” Essays are submitted individually by the student via email to Kim McNulty, Hazleton Rotary Essay Contest Chair, at kmcnulty@mmiprep.org no later than Friday, February 21, 2025. Essays are reviewed locally by a committee and a local winner is selected. The local essay winner will receive a prize of $100 and will be invited to a Hazleton Rotary Club meeting in the spring to read his/her winning essay to the Club’s members. The local winner’s essay will be submitted to Rotary District 7410 to compete at the District level against local winners from all over Northeastern Pennsylvania. District readers will evaluate all local winner essays and the top three in the District will be awarded prizes of $1,000 (first place), $500 (second place), and $250 (third place).

Piper Charitable Trust, Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, will award one or more scholarships to qualified students for a two-year or less Career Technology scholarship program for students wishing to earn an Associate’s Degree, an Accredited Certificate or to receive license preparation. This Scholarship is meant to help students who want to enter various fields such as, but not limited to: Accounting, Automotive, Business/IT, Computer Sciences, Cosmetology, Culinary, Health Sciences, Skilled Trades, Truck Driving. ROY W. PIPER CHARITABLE TRUST MILITARY-RELATED SCHOLARSHIP The Roy W. Piper Charitable Trust announces the availability of one annually renewable military-related scholarship, commencing with Academic Year 2025-2026 to a student graduating, or who has graduated, from high school. Consideration will be given to applications for military related secondary or prep schools. Principal preference will be given to a student graduating, or who has graduated, from a high school located in Wyoming County, Lackawanna County or Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The scholarship will be awarded annually, based on academic merit, community and extracurricular involvement, and financial need to an accredited military or military-related college or university of the student’s choice. To be eligible to complete this application, the student must plan and actually enroll in the institution’s cadet program upon entrance. The completed application and all supporting data must be received by the Trust at the above address on or prior to March 15, 2025.

The Hazleton Area High School Cheerleading Award(s) is to recognize and celebrate senior cheerleaders who have received four-year letter status for four consecutive years for their participation within the Hazleton Area High School Cheerleading Program. Through this scholarship(s), the Hazleton Area High School Cheerleading Booster Clubs look to promote ongoing leadership, dedication, and school spirit. This award(s) is being offered to senior students who have been named as a letter recipient in the sport of cheerleading for four consecutive years and maintain a GPA of 85 or better and plan to attend a two-or four-year post-secondary program or enlist in the United States Military. Wyoming Valley Conference PIAA Track and Field Officials Jim Fisher Sportsmanship Award/Scholarship. $200 Award. Participated in Varsity Track and Field for 2 or more years. GPA of 3.0 or Higher (Equivalent to 83% or Higher). Must be mailed by April 15, 2025.
The Clarence H John Memorial Scholarship. The Clarence H. John Memorial Award is named in honor of a former Hazleton Area High School administrator. Mr. John worked tirelessly for the betterment of the educational system. His family has graciously offered a generous scholarship in his memory. His legacy will continue through this scholarship. This award is being offered to senior students who maintain a GPA of 85 or better and plan to attend a four-year post-secondary program majoring in Education. The award is $2,500. The deadline is April 15th, 2025.
The Carmen Delese Sr. Scholarship. Senior students who plan to attend any approved post-secondary Career and Technical training institution. $1,000. The deadline is April 16, 2025.
Scarpati Family Scholarship 2025. This scholarship is open to all seniors who currently reside in McAdoo, Kelayres or Kline Township (zip codes 18231 & 18237) who plan to attend a 2-year or 4-year college or university after graduation. Applicants need to complete the application and submit an essay as outlined below. The selected applicant will be awarded $1,000 to support their future education. Although not required, you may submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, coach or school administrator to support your application. Please submit your completed application (including signatures) to the Guidance Office by April 16, 2025.
Metzger Wickersham Opens 2025 ‘Road To Safety’ Scholarship Contest. Submissions Welcome for More Than $2,200 in Scholarship Prizes. Metzger Wickersham, one of Pennsylvania’s oldest personal injury law firms, announced today it is accepting submissions for its Road to Safety Scholarship Contest. The annual competition invites Pennsylvania high school seniors to submit creative projects that remind drivers of the dangers of driving under the influence or while distracted. The firm welcomes students to apply their creativity to posters, billboard designs, paintings or drawings, digital designs, videos, songs, or other projects that encourage their peers to drive safely. Submissions may be made through the contest website, www.ArriveAlivePA.com. The submission deadline is April 15, 2025.
$500 Athena Club Award. The Athena Club Award is a one-time (non-recurring) scholarship awarded to one female student that possesses the qualities of a leader and embodies the mission of the Athena Club which is to empower other women. The deadline is April 17, 2025.
Anonymous Scholarship. Criteria: Senior student who is actively involved with community service or volunteerism. Must submit a list of: Honors & Awards/ GPA -85 or better, School Organizations, Extracurricular Activities. Please enclose an official transcript of grades & SAT scores. Alexis Memorial Scholarship. Write a brief essay describing your Italian heritage and what it means to you. The deadline is April 21, 2025
Tim Martin Memorial Scholarship. Write an essay highlighting your involvement in volunteer services to school and/or the community. The deadline is April, 23, 2025.
Cynthia Parva Prize for Exceptional Promise in the Performing Arts. Candidates should excel in one or more of the performing arts, showing potential in, but not limited to, acting, singing, dancing, and/or music. The deadline is April 23, 2025.The 2025 Arthur and Eileen Whitaker Memorial Trade Scholarship is a one-time award of $2,000 coordinated by Hazleton Rotary. Established in 2023 to further area students’ formal training and education in a bona fide trade school or similar training/educational program, including but not limited to, plumbing, welding, electrical, HVAC, masonry, truck and automotive maintenance, automotive repair, CDL licensure, beauty school, barber school, massage therapy, and licensed practical nurse programs, but excluding education and training for which a baccalaureate or higher degree may be awarded. The deadline is April 23, 2025.
2025 Greater Hazleton Area Civic Partnership Technical Scholarship Award is $4,000 per year for up to two years, or for a total maximum scholarship of $8,000. The following criteria will be used in the screening of applications for the 2025 Greater Hazleton Area Civic Partnership Technical Scholarship. 1. Candidates must be pursuing technical study ranging from a certificate program of less than one year’s duration to an associate or baccalaureate degree program at an accredited institution. 2. Candidates must either attend a school in the Hazleton Area School District; or attend school at ICS, MMI, Marian, or a school in the Weatherly Area School District. 3. Adult learners residing within the boundaries of the Hazleton Area School District are welcomed to apply. 4. Candidates must be in good academic standing and must achieve a 2.75 or equivalent average each semester in their post-secondary studies in order to renew the scholarship. 5. Applications are due no later than Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Prepare a 500-word essay explaining the value of your experience at work or as a volunteer. Also, please indicate what you plan to accomplish if awarded this scholarship.
2025 Hazleton Rotary Memorial Scholarships. Hazleton Rotary will offer three Memorial Scholarships in 2025. The first award will be $4,000 annually for four years ($16,000 scholarship total). The second award will be $3,000 annually for four years ($9,000 scholarship total). The third award will be $1,500 annually for four years ($6,000 scholarship total). Mid Penn Bank’s “Anna Woodside Scholarship” rewards four outstanding high school seniors with $1,000 for college tuition costs. To be considered, applicants must prove dedication to academic excellence and community service. The scholarship is named in honor of Anna Woodside, a woman of great influence to Mid Penn Bank for more than 75 years. Ms. Woodside broke barriers for women of her generation by attending college, pursuing a career and spreading philanthropy throughout the community. The scholarship will reward students who show qualities similar to those of Ms. Woodside. ELIGIBILITY Applicants must be high school seniors who reside within Mid Penn Bank’s Service Area. Applicants must enroll full time at an accredited college, university or vocational-technical school in the United States for the fall term of the 2024-2025 school year. The William E. Dearden Foundation and the Hershey Company Continuing Education Scholarship. Dearden, a distinguished and highly respected alumnus of Milton Hershey School (MHS) and former Chairman of the Board of The Hershey Company. From his graduation in 1940 to his death in 2003, Mr. Dearden was driven in all aspects of his life by his love for and indebtedness to Milton S. Hershey, founder of The Hershey Company and Milton Hershey School. Mr. Dearden spent virtually his entire career at The Hershey Company working to repay his debt of gratitude for all they had provided him as a student and made possible for his future. 28th Annual Holocaust Memorial Essay Contest. The essay contest is open to all Middle and High School students in the greater Hazleton area. The deadline for the above Luzerne Foundation scholarships is April 15, 2024.2024 Hazleton Rotary Memorial Scholarships Application. Hazleton Rotary will offer three Memorial Scholarships in 2024. The first award will be $3,000 annually for 4 years ($12,000 scholarship total). The second award will be $2,000 annually for four years ($8,000 scholarship total). The third award will be $1,000 annually for four years ($4,000 scholarship total). The deadline is April 19. 2024.
The 2024 Arthur and Eileen Whitaker Memorial Trade Scholarship is a one-time award of $2,000 coordinated by Hazleton Rotary. Applications are due April 19, 2024. Established in 2023 to further area students' program training and education in a bona fide trade school or similar training/educational program, including but not limited to, plumbing, welding, electrical, HVAC, masonry, truck and automotive maintenance, automotive repair, CDL licensure, beauty school, barber school, massage therapy, and licensed practical nurse programs, but excluding education and training for which a baccalaureate or higher degree may be awarded.
2024 Greater Hazleton Area Civic Partnership Technical Scholarship Application is $4,000 per year for up to 2 years, or for a total maximum scholarship of $8,000. Candidates must be pursuing technical studies ranging from a certificate program of less than one year's duration to an associate or baccaluaureate degree program at an accredited institution. Reverend Louis Garbacik Memorial Scholarship Fund. Two separate essays of more than 1,000 words per essay on, "Why am I proud of my Polish Heritage?" and "Who do I consider to be the greatest Pole/Polish American in history and why? HAZLETON CHAPTER OF UNICO 2024 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION UNICO UNICO is an acronym that stands for Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity, and Opportunity, and our motto is “Service Above Self”. Our goal is to give back to our local community by providing assistance to local area organizations and to award high school students an annual scholarship to help with post-secondary costs in an academic or technical school program of study. The Hazleton Chapter of UNICO will be awarding a $1500 scholarship to each of four students selected by a panel of independent judges. We will be awarding two students who have been accepted to an academic 2 or 4 year college and two students who have been accepted to a trade/technical school. All the requirements below must be completed by May 1st, 2024.
The Geraldine S. Shepperson Memorial Award. Must be active in community service/volunteerism. 3.0 GPA and must be pursuing a 4-year college/university. The deadline is April 30, 2024.

The FR. Richard Schware Council 16072 Knights of Columbus 2024 Scholarship Applicant must be a current High School Student on track to graduate in 2024. The applicant must be a current active member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Ringtown or St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Sheppton, PA. Attending an institution of higher education in the fall of 2024: two or four-year college or university, community college, business or trade school. Attendance may be part or full time. The Hagan Scholarship Foundation is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship, providing recipients with the opportunity to graduate from college debt-free. The annual UNICO Brian Piccolo Award is for a local high school senior who has overcome adversity in his or her life, and returned to excel in the classroom as well as on the court or field, depending on their chosen sport. West Hazleton Lions Club Scholarship Criteria& Application Two Scholarships of $500 each will be awarded to a graduating high school seniors. Students must be from the former West Hazleton High School District boundaries (prior to 1993): Banks Township, Black Creek Township, Conyngham Borough, East Union Township, Hazle Township (West Hazleton Section), North Union Township, Sugarloaf Township and West Hazleton Borough. All Applications are due by May 17, 2024. Award recipients will be notified by phone and/or email by May 21, 2024. Awards will be presented on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 6:30 pm at Eli's Restaurant in West Hazleton. Dinner will be provided to the award recipient and up to 2 guests. ***The date of this awards ceremony is subject to change if award recipients have conflicts with the date.
Wilkes Barre UNICO Scholarship. The candidate shall be of Italian descent. (Must have 1 parent or grandparent of Italian origin). The deadline is May 15, 2024.

John Gould Memorial Scholarship, Presented by: The Kiwanis Club of The Valley/Conyngham. In order to be eligible for this award, the student must have attended either, Valley, Drums or Freeland Elementary/Middle School and been a member of the Builders Club in that school. John Gould & Ryanne Cara Memorial Scholarship. All high school seniors who are currently CVCO members are invited to apply for the John Gould & Ryanne Cara Memorial Scholarship, a financial award of up to $1,000 that can be applied to further the student’s education. The deadline is May 31, 2024.
The Latoff MS Foundation Scholarship. Application $1,000 college scholarship to a student from northeastern PA whose life has been impacted by multiple sclerosis. The recipient will be chosen by the foundation board of directors based upon review of this application and the accompanying essay. The deadline is July 15, 2024. The scholarship will be awarded in August of 2024.
